Hassinen, Pekka
The photographs show a previously unknown phenomenon, called "kaila", a series of artefacts made by the artist himself. These wisps of things made of bulrush leaves float on the water's surface, surrounded by Finnish lakeland scenery. Shooting the kailas is a bit like fly fishing, as the artist wades in the shallows with the camera in his hand. In essence, the kaila is situated somewhere between organic material and the inanimate world, and it could be called a "livject", only a few of which are known to our culture: a bridal bouquet, a birch whisk, a laurel crown.
